LOS ANGELES – June 27, 2024 – (Motor Sports NewsWire) – The Barry Taylor Collection of rare pre-merger AMG cars, parts, and spares closed after one week of online bidding with white-glove results – doubling its all-in estimate to achieve a total of nearly $1.2 million. This was the first auction of a two-part sale with the remaining collection of approximately 300 lots being offered in July.
The collection presented an unparalleled opportunity, evident from the overwhelming response following the announcement of the sale by Bonhams|Cars. The global interest in the auction was truly remarkable, with buyers hailing from Denmark, France, the UK, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Qatar, and the US. The sale also attracted a significant number of new registrants, with an impressive 63% of hammer coming from first-time buyers.
Kurt Forry, Bonhams|Cars Specialist of Automobilia in the US commented: “This level of participation highlights the widespread appeal and excitement generated by AMGs. We’re thrilled to have reached a global audience with this collection and look forward to presenting more rarities in the next sale.”
The 220-lot sale made a total of nearly $1.2 million with 100% sold by lot.
The “Green Machine” was the knockout of the sale, with the 1976 Mercedes-Benz 450SLC Coupe soaring past it’s presale estimate by over five times with a final selling price of $345,000. Several pieces of automobilia outperformed their presale estimates such as the grouping of AMG Maintenance, Specifications, Spare Parts Guide and others which sold for $17,920 against an estimate of $250 – $500.
Highlights of the sale included:
- 1985 Mercedes-Benz 500SEL AMG 6.0, sold for $63,250, outperforming its estimate of $18,000 – $25,000.
- 1984 Mercedes-Benz 190E AMG, sold for $52,900, again exceeding its initial estimate of $32,000 – $38,000.
Part 2 of AMG Rediscovered will be offered online from July 22-29. Approximately 300 lots of parts and spares from the Estate of Barry Taylor will be offered without reserve. Follow the sale at BonhamsCars.com for updates.
