Jack Draper and Taylor Fritz both hope to be fully fit for the upcoming Sunshine Double in Indian Wells and Miami after announcing their respective withdrawals from this week’s ATP 500 events in Dubai and Acapulco.
In announcing his withdrawal from Acapulco on Saturday, Fritz revealed that he’s been “playing through” an abdominal injury since before the Dallas Open, played earlier this month. Fritz lost in the second round there to eventual champion Denis Shapovalov, and lost a week later in the semifinals of his title defense at the Delray Beach Open to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
“I’m at a point now where it has not improved and it’s frustrating to be playing when I know I can’t play 100% and am avoiding certain shots or just hitting shots differently then I normally would to avoid the pain,” Fritz wrote in a post on Instagram.
The American, who won his first ATP Masters 1000 event by beating Rafael Nadal in the final of the BNP Paribas Open, says he hopes “that giving it this week to rest and rehab will get me back to 100% soon.”
