Kerber announced her first pregnancy ahead of the 2022 US Open, and missed all of 2023 on maternity leave. She returned to the sport in 2024, a season which became her farewell tour when she announced she’d retire after the Paris Olympics.
The three-time Grand Slam champion’s final tournament ended in the quarterfinals after a resurgent run that saw her beat Naomi Osaka and Leylah Fernandez, and then give eventual gold medalist Zheng Qinwen all she could handle in a thrilling three-set quarterfinal.
