Speaking of redesigns, the refreshed US Open mixed doubles tournament may serve as another motivation for the defending champion. Though Sabalenka has mainly focused on singles since winning her second major doubles title in 2021, Dubai’s top seed is intrigued by the shortened format, set to play out during the tournament’s annual Fan Week.
“I’d like to play,” said Sabalenka, who won the women’s doubles title with Elise Mertens back in 2019. “I believe it’s a two-day event, and I always enjoy playing doubles. It’s a little fun, sort of exhibition, and that gives me good energy. It helps me to play well in the [singles] tournament. I think it might be fun to play.”
When it came to potential partners, Sabalenka demurred.
“It’s definitely going to be someone good!” she said with a laugh.
