Fresh from their T20 World Cup win in the Caribbean, Team India will embark on their next assignment when they tour Zimbabwe for a five-match T20I series starting July 6.
With seniors Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja announcing their T20I retirements and other key players from the World Cup squad being rested, a largely young Indian squad will feature in five T20Is and three ODIs against Zimbabwe. Shubman Gill was named the captain of the Men in Blue for the series.
Three players – Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube – will link up with the squad after their World Cup commitments in the West Indies. They will also be joined by Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed and Avesh Khan who were the travelling reserves of India’s T20 World Cup squad.
Sai Sudharsan, Jitesh Sharma and Harshit Rana were added to India’s squad for the first two T20Is as Jaiswal, Samson and Dube will travel back home first before flying out to Harare.
The series also handed a maiden senior national call-up for young IPL stars Abhishek Sharma, Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag and Tushar Deshpande. All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy who was initially named in the squad was withdrawn due to an injury, with the BCCI naming Dube as his replacement.
With Rahul Dravid relinquishing as head coach, VVS Laxman will travel with the team to Zimbabwe as the interim replacement. All matches of the series will be played at the Harare Sports Club in Harare.
