Gujarat Titans batter Sai Sudharsan became the quickest Indian to reach 1000 runs in the Indian Premier League, eclipsing Sachin Tendulkar and Ruturaj Gaikwad during the IPL 2024 match against Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday.
The left-handed Sudharsan reached the 1000-run mark in his 25th innings in the IPL, surpassing the joint-Indian record held by the legendary Tendulkar and Gaikwad who scaled the feat in 31 innings apiece. While Tendulkar reached the mark in April 2010, CSK skipper Gaikwad completed 1000 runs in the 2022 season.
Sudharsan achieved the milestone when he struck CSK seamer Simarjeet Singh for successive sixes in the 11th over and moved to 71 off 38 deliveries, after GT was sent in to bat.
Overall, Sudharsan is joint-third on the list alongside Matthew Hayden, with only Shaun Marsh (21 innings) and Lendl Simmons (23) ahead of him.
Sudharsan, who was signed up for his base price of Rs. 20 lakh by the Titans ahead of their inaugural season in 2022, made his IPL debut against Punjab Kings on April 8, 2022, scoring 35 off 30 deliveries. The Tamil Nadu batter had since notched up double-figures in his next 22 innings in the IPL before registering his first single-digit score – six off 14 deliveries – in GT’s previous outing against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Sudharsan’s streak of 23 innings with successive double-digit scores is an IPL record, having broken Hardik Pandya’s record of 20 such scores earlier this season.
The 22-year-old made his international debut during India’s ODI series in South Africa, scoring 127 runs in three matches while becoming only the second Indian after Navjot Singh Sidhu to record two successive fifties from debut.
In the IPL 2023 final held in Ahmedabad, Sudharsan powered the Titans to 214 for four against CSK with a blistering 96 off 47 deliveries – the third-highest score by a batter in an IPL summit clash.
