It was a double milestone kind of day for Jannik Sinner in Shanghai on Saturday, as he cruised through his opening match at the Masters 1000 event against Japan’s Taro Daniel, 6-1, 6-4.
The first milestone: it was his 60th win of the year.
Not only is Sinner the first man to record 60 wins this year, he’s actually the first tennis player, male or female, to achieve the feat—Iga Swiatek leads the women’s tour with 59 wins this year.
Additionally, having recorded 64 wins last year, Sinner is the first man with 60 or more wins in back-to-back seasons in eight years, since Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray both did it in 2015 and 2016.
MEN WITH 60+ WINS IN A SEASON SINCE 2015 (tour-level):
2015: Djokovic (82), Murray (71), Federer (63), Nadal (61)
2016: Murray (78), Djokovic (65)
2017: Nadal (68)
2018: Zverev (60)
2019: none
2020: none
2021: Medvedev (63)
2022: Tsitsipas (61), Auger-Aliassime (60)
2023: Medvedev (66), Alcaraz (65), Sinner (64)
2024: Sinner (60)
It’s possible for both Alcaraz and Medvedev to join Sinner with back-to-back 60-plus-win seasons. The two former world No. 1s currently have 49 and 43 wins this year, respectively.
