LONDON, ENGLAND – November 6, 2024 – (Motor Sports NewsWire) – RM Sotheby’s is delighted to announce that its much-anticipated London sale grossed £18,293,215, making it the most successful UK collector car auction of 2024. Held on the eve of the RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, at the all-new venue of The Peninsula London, the sale took place in the packed grand ballroom, elevating the long-established auction to new heights.
The top-selling car of the auction was the 1989 Ferrari F40. The iconic Rosso Corsa over Stoffa Vigogna European market example boasted the sought-after ‘non-cat/non-adjust’ specification, making it perhaps the quintessential collectors’ F40. Attracting huge interest, the car achieved £1,973,750. This was closely followed by an equally special 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB, which was first sold to New York City via Luigi Chinetti Motors and fetched a deserved £1,748,750 when it crossed the block. Completing the top three sales was a remarkable 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, which was displayed by Mercedes-Benz at the 1954 Earls Court Motor Show, and which had subsequently remained in the vendor’s family for the past 70 years before changing hands at the sale for £1,445,000.
Sholto Gilbertson, Director of Sales, UK, said: “Coming to this incredible venue has been a wonderful evolution for the London sale, and we believe it has created the best possible auction experience for our clients. Having a sell-through of 93% for all lots is a remarkable achievement and we are thoroughly delighted. And once again, the weekend was rounded off with another fantastic RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.”
Another noteworthy lot was the historic, competition-rich 1936 Delahaye 135 S Works. Offered directly from the Walker family, who had owned it since 1970, this icon of motor racing and the silver screen thoroughly deserved its £1,096,250.
The veteran and Edwardian cars sold well, and it is notable that the beautiful 1915 Hispano-Suiza Alfonso XIII, which sold for £263,750, travelled to London with continuous history from new in Australia, and has now found a new home in the USA.
