Mercedes-Benz 300SL sells for $1.2 million
NEWPORT, RI – October 5, 2024 – (Motor Sports NewsWire) – Bonhams|Cars returned to The Audrain Newport Concours & Motor Week, a premier destination for car enthusiasts, for its fourth year, a venue that year on year continues to draw strong results with active in-room bidding. On the rostrum for the first time in the US, auctioneer Briony Harford drew bids from the crowd of hundreds of Motor Week attendees. Taking center stage at The Audrain Concours Auction was the 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster, which sold to a bidder in the room at a noteworthy sale price of $1,160,000. This exceptional vehicle, previously part of renowned collector Peter Mullin’s collection for 30 years, features its original numbers-matching engine, making it an excellent candidate for long-distance tours and rallies.

In addition to the automobilia offered, the selection of collector cars reflected the event’s theme of history, luxury and sport, showcased against the backdrop of the International Tennis Hall of Fame. White glove results were achieved for the 60 lots of automobilia. The 40 collector cars offered sold for a total of $3.7 million with 81% sold by lot.
1959 Fiat-OSCA sold for $401,000.
Another standout of the sale was the 1959 Fiat-OSCA 1500 Aerodynamica Berlinetta, which sold for $401,000. Offered for the first time in nearly twenty years, this car was owned and restored by a passionate Italian car collector in an exacting restoration. This is the sole OSCA-powered example of which just two were built to this design. It is fitted with the period-correct ‘Bialbero’ twin-cam OSCA engine and is accompanied by the original engine block.
White glove results were achieved for the collection of Ernie Boch Jr. The 10 cars offered included a brace of Bentley Continental variants presenting the last of the fully English Bentleys. The entire collection totaled nearly $1 million. Highlights included the 1999 Bentley Continental SC, which sold for $240,800 and a 2003 Bentley Continental R Mulliner ‘Final Series’, which sold for $128,800.
